Election and Voter Education Trainer
1. Background
Omni Ethiopia, in partnership with DW Akademie and the Ethiopian Media Council (EMC), is implementing the Empowered Media-Informed Communities (EMIC) Project, funded by the German Government and supported by GIZ GmbH. This initiative aims to strengthen Ethiopia’s community radio sector by enhancing journalists' capacity in critical thematic areas.
The second phase of the EMIC project involves in-person training in six regional towns, equipping community radio journalists with skills to report on electoral processes and foster civic engagement.
2. Training Objectives
- Strengthen journalists’ understanding of electoral processes, voter rights, and democratic governance.
- Equip participants with skills to report accurately, fairly, and inclusively on electoral issues.
- Build capacity to produce multimedia content encouraging civic dialogue.
- Enable journalists to counter misinformation and hate speech during elections.
- Foster ethical standards in election reporting aligned with Ethiopian media regulations.
3. Scope of Work
The trainer will design and deliver an interactive training covering:
Election Reporting & Voter Education
- Electoral processes, legal frameworks, and media’s role.
- Ethiopia’s electoral systems and governance structures.
- Election coverage techniques (field reporting, interviews, investigative angles).
- Ethical considerations (fairness, balance, impartiality).
- Investigative journalism and fact-checking techniques.
- Amplifying underreported stories and marginalized voices.
4. Methodology
- Interactive sessions: presentations, case studies, hands-on exercises.
- Real-world simulations and group discussions.
- Practical content production sessions.
- Pre- and post-training assessments.
5. Deliverables
- Finalized training curriculum.
- Training materials (presentations, handouts, reference tools).
- Pre- and post-assessment tools.
- Feedback on participants’ election content.
- Final report summarizing outcomes and recommendations.
6. Duration & Location
- Locations: Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Hawassa, Jimma, Arba Minch, Bahir Dar.
- Duration: 4 consecutive days per town (20 participants each).
- Timeline: May or June 2025.
7. Trainer Qualifications
- Experience: 5+ years in civic education, election reporting, or journalism training.
- Expertise: Ethiopian electoral law and media guidelines.
- Skills: Participatory training, adult education methodologies.
- Background: Experience with community radio/local media.
- Languages: Proficiency in Amharic; local languages a plus.
- Soft Skills: Strong communication, facilitation, mentorship.
