Job Purpose
Under the supervision of the Head of Communications, the Communication Officer will assist in planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating communication strategies to:
- Raise awareness of food security issues
- Strengthen political will for WFP’s mission
- Enhance WFP’s credibility and brand in Ethiopia
Key Accountabilities
Media Relations
- Develop and maintain relationships with journalists/media outlets (print, TV, radio, web)
- Communicate WFP’s mission effectively to a wider audience
Monitoring & Evaluation
- Conduct regular monitoring/evaluation of communication efforts
- Prepare and share timely reports
Strategy & Content Development
- Implement WFP’s communication strategy and project plans
- Produce high-quality content (newsletters, briefs, fact sheets)
- Support video, photo, and radio production
Donor & Stakeholder Engagement
- Generate donor-specific visibility content (text, photos, videos)
- Organize visibility events (handover ceremonies, agreement signings)
Public Relations & Advocacy
- Draft press releases, speeches, and key messages
- Monitor traditional and social media for strategy evaluation
Capacity Building & Branding
- Train WFP staff on communication best practices
- Ensure corporate branding consistency (publications, signage, etc.)
Emergency Preparedness & Partnerships
- Support rapid response communication during crises
- Collaborate with UN/Government partners on SDG-related initiatives
Qualifications & Experience
Education:
- University degree in Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications, or related field
Experience:
- Minimum 1 year in communications (postgraduate)
- Desirable:
- Experience in UN/international humanitarian communications
- Specialist communications techniques (videography, graphics design)
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong media relations and influencer engagement
- Knowledge of multilateral/interagency dynamics
- Ability to produce compelling communication materials
Language:
- Fluency in English (Level C)
